OpenAI Will Merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work Tabs, TechCrunch Reports, 47 Days After Anthropic Announced a Similar Merge. The Shared Usage Pool Is the Part to Watch.

Adrian Vale··5 min read

On Monday, November 2, 2026, TechCrunch's Ivan Mehta reported that OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT, according to an email sent to users. The merged experience is meant to let someone move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it out in one place: bring in files and plugins, ask it to build a website, create a presentation or do tasks on the web, and review its work along the way.

It is a small headline with a larger meaning. The tab merge is a design decision. The usage pool is the business decision. We think the second one is what changes how people pay attention to their ChatGPT quota.

What the Email Says, as Reported

We have not seen the email itself. Everything below comes from TechCrunch and from a second report by Trending Topics, which describes the same email. OpenAI has not, in anything we found, published a matching announcement.

Today the ChatGPT desktop app has a ChatGPT section and a Codex section, and the ChatGPT section holds the Chat and Work tabs, per TechCrunch. The reports give no plan tiers and no limit numbers. That gap matters, and we come back to it below.

Anthropic Did This First

TechCrunch notes that Anthropic merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September. Anthropic's announcement, covered by 9to5Mac, came on Wednesday, September 16, 2026: "Starting today, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude." The count from that date to TechCrunch's November 2 report is 47 days.

This is not a copy of one product by another in any way we can prove. OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux, who runs ChatGPT and Codex, said in early October on Lenny Rachitsky's podcast that the company planned to merge the Chat and Work surfaces, per Trending Topics. Both companies looked at the same user problem, which Anthropic put this way: "So we stopped making you choose."

Why the Shared Pool Matters

ChatGPT Work launched on Thursday, July 9, 2026, alongside the public GPT-5.6 rollout. The Decoder reported at the time that Work already shared one agent-based usage pool with Codex, ChatGPT for Excel and Workspace Agents, with consumption depending on task size, complexity and model. We wrote about that pricing shift in July.

So the new part, as we read the reports, is ordinary ChatGPT use joining that pool. TechCrunch says ChatGPT and Codex will draw usage from the same allowance after the change. That reading is our inference from the July pool and the November email, not something the email states in those words.

OpenAI says most users will not be affected and that some may wait for usage resets more often. Both can be true. A user who mostly chats will barely notice. A user who runs long Codex jobs and then wants a quick answer may find the quick answer is the thing that gets rationed. Trending Topics adds that some subscribers saw a checkout notice about a single limit for ChatGPT and Codex starting in December. It does not say which plans, and the email itself gave no December date.

Our Take

One tab is easier to explain than two, and a single entry point suits an agent that decides how much work a request needs. We think that is the right product call, and it is the one Anthropic made first.

The risk is legibility. When chat, agent work and coding draw from one pool, the price of a single question depends on what else you did that day. OpenAI's "most users" wording does not tell a heavy Codex user whether they are in the minority. Until the numbers are published, treat the reassurance as unverified.

One caveat. This is a test announced to select users, with no dates, and the details may change before a wide rollout. We have a company email relayed by two outlets, not an OpenAI post or help page, so we are holding the figures to what was reported.

Three Signposts for the Next 60 Days

First, whether OpenAI publishes plan-level limits for the shared ChatGPT and Codex pool. Second, whether the merged tab reaches general availability, and for which plans first. Third, whether the December single-limit notice that some subscribers saw is confirmed by OpenAI and tied to specific plans.
